FUMC Ministry Staff Bio's

Rev. David Lillie   Co-Pastor

Let's see, a biography generally lists some specific information about a person, so let's start with some background material. My name is Dave Lillie. (You're welcome to call me Reverend Dave, Pastor Dave, or Dave - whatever you are comfortable with.) I was born in 1956. Carol and I are co-pastors, and partners in life. We were married in 1977 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, in Albuquerque, NM. We have three adult children, Megan (Lillie) Smith, Bryson, and Colin. Megan lives in College Station, TX with her husband Aaron; Bryson lives in Independence, MO with his wife Sarah; Colin lives in Grand Junction, CO. I have served Christ as pastor (and now co-pastor!) for 16 years. During 12 of those years the churches I've been privileged to lead have received Conference awards for growth and vitality.

You might think that the fact that Carol and I were married in the United Methodist church indicates a life-long connection with the church. That couldn't be further from the truth. I grew up without attending church (OK, maybe two or three times that I remember before I turned 21 …) and had a very typical attitude for most of my generation, specifically that churches only existed to tell people what to think and what to do … and to make us give them money!

I began to discover how wrong that attitude was when, at age 30, Carol and I decided to attend a new church being established on the western edge of the Albuquerque suburbs. I discovered that God had been available to me throughout my life and that, at times, I had even been very aware of God's presence. I also discovered that not all churches focus on telling people what to think and do, instead encouraging everyone to explore their understanding of God and faith in a loving and supportive environment. I met Jesus Christ in a very real and personal way and my life began to change for the better.

I won't claim that life was tough or difficult and that spiritual community allowed me to find blissful relief. In fact we lived “the good life.” I was very well paid as a corporate controller. We lived in a custom built home and I drove a restored classic car to work every day. A country club membership was nice, and we could buy whatever physical things we wanted. Along with all that I possessed an incredible sense of emptiness and a longing for a sense of meaning and purpose in my life.

At age 35 we sold our home, moved to the Denver area, and I began to attend seminary. The following year I began serving Christ as an appointed United Methodist pastor. I have tried, through my pastoral leadership to duplicate the kind of loving, supportive atmosphere that allowed me to discover Christ's presence in my life.

My hope is that all who come to First UMC will feel comfortable and free to explore the claims of Jesus Christ and experience His presence through worship and being part of an energetic and enthusiastic spiritual community. Carol and I pledge to offer you relevant, hope-filled messages each week surrounded by upbeat music that includes both traditional hymns and contemporary praise music. We would love to share more about our spiritual journeys with anyone who is interested - by phone, e-mail, or best of all over a cup of coffee.

If you've ever felt empty and wondered what the purpose of living is … or know someone who feels that way, suggest a visit to First UMC on any Sunday. A welcoming community of faith is waiting - where faith and reason are compatible, and Christ is ready to make life better than ever before!

Rev. Carol Lillie   Co-Pastor

I was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and think of myself as a “desert rat”. I love the Southwest and consider Northern New Mexico, Colorado and the Four Corners region to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. I feel privileged to live and serve in this beautiful community!

In 1992, I returned to college after a busy 16 year “time out” from school. The majority of my work experience outside the church has been in construction offices from home contractors to commercial builders. I've also done a lot of work in fundraising and community service. For several years I organized a benefit golf tournament for the N.M. Boys and Girls Ranch and taught Lamaze classes part-time.

Dave and I attended the same High School but never met until after my High School graduation in 1976 (yes, there were schools WAAAY back then). We went on our first date in October 1976 and were married in March, 1977. We have three grown children: Megan 27, Bryson 25 and Colin 23. Two of our three kids were married in 2008. Megan is married to Aaron and is working on a Master's Degree at Texas A&M and Aaron is completing work on a Doctorate as well. Bryson is married to Sarah and they recently moved to the Kansas City area where Sarah is teaching and Bryson is a student at St. Paul's Seminary (he is also a youth pastor at a church in Independence Missouri. Ministry is becoming the family business). We also have a long haired Chihuahua named “Grommit” who isn't the “brightest crayon in the box” - but we like her anyway.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, in 1996 with a Major in Sociology and a Minor in Women's Studies. I graduated from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, in 2000 with Master's of Divinity degree. I was Ordained an Elder in “full connection” in The United Methodist Church in 2005.

Helping to “birth” a brand new church on the West side of Albuquerque in the mid-1980's was a life-changing event for me. I had the opportunity as a lay person to step out in faith, take risks and learn about Christian leadership at a grass roots level. We honored God's call to full-time professional ministry when we moved to Denver in 1991, so that Dave could start Seminary. I had to complete undergraduate work before I could begin work on my Master's degree so I commuted to Greeley for several years - later I commuted daily from Loveland to Denver to attend classes at Iliff.

My ministry experience is quite varied. I have worked as a Chaplain, as the Pastor of a small, rural, church (Howard UMC, Last Chance, Co.), as the Associate Pastor of First UMC, Greeley, the Director of Wesley Foundation Campus Ministries in Laramie and now as the Co-Pastor of First United Methodist Church - Longmont.

Creativity is an essential part of my life. Ministry gives me the chance to use my creative ability to help people discover and express Christ's presence in their lives. I love visiting with folks and hearing their life stories. Ministry is a job that constantly changes and I really thrive on it's variety and challenge. Whether I'm teaching a class, preaching or facilitating a retreat, I'm always learning something new and exciting. Faith is an adventure that is always fresh and new ... I'd love to visit with you about your adventure and how Christ can become an even bigger part of it!
