First
UMC is a partner with Spangler Elementary in offering a Kids' Hope Mentoring Program. Volunteers from First
UMC form a mentoring relationship with a child, who is referred by school officials, to offer friendship, guidance, and positive support through the school year. The presence of such a caring relationship has been identified as a key factor in assisting children in various at-risk situations to achieve improvement in social and intellectual activities. We believe that Christians are called not just to believe, but to put that belief into action, and reaching out to children was specifically mentioned by Jesus.
Kids' Hope mentors spend just one hour per week, reading, talking, playing and listening to a child at school. By helping the child feel loved and valued, they help that child to learn, grow and succeed.
